Going Home .... |
Advice: |

If there is one, single, piece of advice that would best serve the owner of a classic Mini or Moke, that would be "Lubrication". Lubrication is absolutely critical to the Engine and Gearbox of the Mini being shared, and should never be skimped on or overlooked. The majority of wear or catastrophic failures in the Engine and Gearbox assemblies can be traced to lubrication problems.
Remember the old adages: "Penny wise, Pound foolish", and, "A stitch in time saves nine". |

Important points to remember: |
| |
Make it a habit of watching the oil pressure gauge (if fitted) when the engine is running. A low or fluctuating reading is indicative of a problem and should be attended to as soon as is possible, as should a flickering Oil Warning Light, or one that takes too long to go off, after the engine has been started. |

| |
Check the Oil level and visually the quality of the Oil, preferably once a week. Accelerated oil consumption, Oil that blackens quickly after changing or turns milky or a "rusty" colour are indicative of problems, ranging from the fuel mixture being too rich, a blown cylinder head gasket to a cracked cylinder head.
If you are uncertain as the condition of you oil, or its seem to be strangely disappearing or increasing, please bring you car in for a immediate check-up. |

Use ONLY good quality, recognised and trusted brands of Oil and Filters. Avoid unknown or "house" brands of Oil and Filters where possible, especially avoid recycled or blended recycled oils.
The Mini was designed for and prefers a good quality "traditional" mineral 20W50 or appropriate mono-grade oil. In the workshop we offer Castrol GTX, Shell Triple X and Shell Helix Super as these are known quality oils, tried and tested over time. |

| |
Do not "stretch" or over-run the prescribed oil change or lubrication intervals. This is simply false economy. If anything, more frequent changes are beneficial and would help prolong the life of the Engine and Gearbox. |
| |
Do not add "additives" to the Oil, no matter the benefits they may claim. Any form of "improved lubrication" additive can cause the gear syncro-mesh to stop working and the only currently known method of rectifying this is to strip and clean the gearbox in a strong solvent, a horrible and expensive job ! |

Wanting to convert to synthetic oils ? This is a subject all on its own, so please call or come in for advice backed up by actual experience ! |
